Black Sea attracts international interest

More exploration on the horizon

The Black Sea is seeing renewed interest from international exploration companies, and more exploration drilling is on the horizon.
The Black Sea has been poorly explored to date, and success in the region has been limited. In recent months, however, a number of international companies have shown renewed interest, and plans are in place to drill several key exploration wells in the near future.

The Black Sea lies northeast of the Mediterranean Sea in waters belonging to Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, and Turkey. Bounded by areas affected mainly by Tertiary compressive deformation, the sea is composed of two extensional basins, the western and eastern Black seas, which are separated by the Mid Black Sea High. The two rifts have coalesced in their post-rift phases to form the present single depocenter.

From the Late Eocene onward, the post-rift Black Sea basins underwent compression at their southern, northern, and eastern margins, associated with the closure of the Tethyan Ocean system. The region saw the most intense compression in the Oligocene, but the phenomenon continues today.

The Black Sea plays an important role for hydrocarbon transits in the region. Nearly a third of the Russian oil exports, about half of the Kazakh exports, and all of the exports from Azerbaijan cross the Black Sea and the congested Bosporus Strait, a situation that should improve slightly with the opening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which will transport Caspian oil overland to the Mediterranean. Since early 2003, Russia has also exported gas to Turkey through the submarine Blue Stream pipeline, which lies under the Black Sea.

Turkey

Only nine wells have been drilled in the Turkish sector of the Black Sea. Madison Oil Turkey Inc. (parent Toreador Resources), spudded a tenth in early May. Madison operates 14 coastal blocks, though its work focuses around its Ayazli 1 gas discovery and the surrounding South Akcakoca sub-basin, where 13 potential drilling locations and six prospects have been identified. The six prospects have a reserve potential-per-prospect ranging from 100 bcf to 1 tcf.

BP expected to spud its first exploration well, Hopa HPX 1, in June. Hopa HPX1 lies in water depths ranging from 1,500 m to 2,000 m, and was to reach an approximate 4,600 m TD. The well is in block 3534 and marks the first well drilled in deepwater since Arco’s two Limankoy wells, which were P&A’d with gas shows in 1999.

In 2004, Turkish state company TPAO shot more than 15,000 km of 2D seismic data and a 3D seismic survey covering 205 sq km of its blocks. Unfortunately, the re-award in June 2004 of TPAO’s deepwater blocks caused controversy. Madison was among the most notable challengers, despite the fact that Madison is partnered with TPAO in eight of its blocks. The dispute arose after TPAO re-awarded the licences three months after dropping them. Turkish law prohibits a company from re-applying for the same licence within 12 months of its being relinquished. Despite the questionable re-award, TPAO remains operator of the blocks.

IST Canada sells 100th unit to Turkey's Nar Enerji

Aecon's Innovative Steam Technology sells 100th unit to Turkey's Nar Enerji

TORONTO, July 12 /CNW/ - Aecon Group Inc. (TSX: ARE) today announced its wholly owned subsidiary Innovative Steam Technologies (IST) was awarded a contract to supply its 100th once through steam generator (OTSG) to Nar Enerji in Cerkezkoy, Turkey. The OTSG for Nar Enerji is expected to be delivered on an accelerated schedule of six months and is valued at approximately $3 million.

IST will design and manufacture a single-pressure OTSG that will recover heat from a 45 megawatt gas turbine. OTSGs recover waste exhaust heat from gas turbines that produce steam; the steam is then injected into steam turbines to generate electricity. Without the OTSG, exhaust gas would be emitted into the atmosphere as unused energy.

OTSG technology improves the efficiency of its customers' power plants and is better for the environment compared to many power generation sources. The OTSGs are commonly used in two types of power plants known as combined- cycle or co-generation power plants.

ENKA to be the general contractor for construction of Sheremetyevo 3

Aeroflot-Russian Airlines and JSC “Terminal” (100% daughter company of Aeroflot-Russian Airlines) have finished the assessment of the offers for the contract on construction of Air Terminal Complex (ATC) Sheremetyevo 3. The offer presented by “ENKA” was considered to be the best.

The tender on the general contractor selection was organized by the company ATC Bovis Lend Lease and held in accordance with the procedures established worldwide making it possible to choose the winner on an objective and transparent basis.

38 Russian and International largest Constructing companies selected from public sources have been attracted to the competition. The criteria for selection were the cost of construction, its duration, the schedule of funding, the quality of the technical offer, and the policy in security and environment protection.

In order to increase the receipts of the Russian Federation the contract will be concluded with 100% Russian daughter company of the winner with the provision of all guarantees.

It is planned to finalize the construction within 26 months and to put the Terminal in operation in autumn 2007.

ATC Sheremetyevo 3 will make it possible:

to strengthen Aeroflot-Russian Airlines and Sheremetyevo Airport competitiveness in international market, and to use the advantages of good location of Moscow;
to benefit to country image and to increase its investment attractiveness.
to obtain 9 billion rubles of taxes.
Actualization of the project will provide the people of the adjusted areas with:

several thousands new working places;
improvement of the social and economic situation in the region;
a stimulus for infrastructure development near the airport.
JSC “ Sheremetyevo International Airport”, Vneshtorgbank and Sberbank of RF confirmed their intention to participate in the project.

Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow region is the largest international Airport of the Russian Federation. In 2004 it served 12.8 billion passengers or 38% of total air carriages in and about 47% of total volume of Moscow Aviation Center. Regular international flights are made from Sheremetyevo by over 40 International Air Companies and also by Russian and CIS air companies.

Aeroflot-Russian Airlines makes over 50% of international and about 40% of local passenger air carriages of Sheremetyevo Airport which is the main airport of the company.

For the time being Sheremetyevo Airport has two passenger terminals for serving local and international airlines (Sheremetyevo 1 and Sheremetyevo 2), and also auxiliary aviation systems. The carrying capacities of Sheremetyevo 1 and Sheremetyevo 2 are 600-650 and 2100 passengers per hour respectively (in accordance with IATA norms). The capacities of the existing systems are fully utilized. In future due to growth of air carriages volume Sheremetyevo will face the deficit of carrying capacities (it is assumed to reach 2900 passengers per hour by 2010).

Estimation of possible scenarios of aviation systems development on the territory of Sheremetyevo Airport demonstrated that the most reasonable solution will be the construction of a new Air Terminal Sheremetyevo 3 with the carrying capacity of 3800 passengers per hour (arrival plus departure) or 2500 passengers per hour (arrival or departure) and auxiliary land and air facilities. The terminal will be constructed on the area adjusting to Sheremetyevo 2 terminal; Aeroflot has the right to lease it.

TEKFEN wins $222m contract to build oil storage tanks in Kuwait

Turkish firm wins $222m contract to build oil storage tanks in Kuwait

Kuwait: Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has awarded Turkey’s Tekfen Construction and Installation Company a 222-million-dollar contract to build eight crude oil storage tanks, KOC said yesterday.

“This project will improve the oil export facilities and will increase the (storage) capacity to match (oil) production of 2.62 million barrels per day (bpd),” KOC executive assistant to the chairman, Ali Dugheim Al Shimary, said in a company statement. Construction is expected to begin as soon as possible, it said.
Each storage tank will have a net capacity of 618,000 barrels, a KOC spokesperson said. The new tanks will raise KOC’s current crude oil storage capacity from 16 million barrels to 20.9 million barrels.

The tanks will be built at KOC’s South Tank Farm and the first three tanks are expected to be commissioned November 2006 under Phase I of the project, with the remaining five to be commissioned July 2007, the statement added.

Under the contract, Tekfen will construct the eight tanks, install pipelines, an electrical system, a fire prevention system, and an environmental protection related system. – DPA

PowerGen Europe Conference 2005, Milan Italy

Last week of June 2005, the main energy event was in Milan Italy for Powergen 2005 conference. The Powergen conferences are very important in energy sector. Any company or individual can participate to a fair or conference in Turkey. That is low cost expense. Even a student with a low budget can easily participate.

If you participate to Powergen Europe Conference, you have to purchase an international ticket to fly to an European city- (Milan, Italy this year), make hotel reservation (most of the time fair price which is double the normal price, in Milan very expensive) and handle your living and travelling expenses.

You have to spend almost one week. That means you are away from your work load and your projects, customers. That is a real dedication. That needs time, money, effort. But you meet with the key players of the international market. Only real players, only serious organisations, and individuals can do.

GE Energy- LM6000PC for BIS Energy Bursa

GE Energy To Provide Equipment To Turkish Power Plant

MILAN, ITALY (June 28, 2005) — GE Energy provided an LM6000-PC aeroderivative gas turbine generator set and will provide a steam turbine generator set to Bis Enerji Elektrik Uretimi Otoprodüktör Grubu A.S. for the Bis Enerji Bursa power plant in Turkey.

The aeroderivative gas turbine generator set is the fourth LM6000 GE Energy has sold to Bis Enerji. It is configured for natural gas operation with water injection for reduced NOx levels.

The steam turbine generator set being supplied by GE Energy, rated at 45 megawatts, uses steam produced in heat recovery steam generators as part of a combined cycle made up of three LM6000s.

Bis Enerji Bursa is a combined-cycle power plant with an output of 362 megawatts. The LM6000-PC began commercial operation in the first quarter of 2005 with the steam turbine generator to follow in 2006.
